It’s always nice to get out
and enjoy some fresh air. Especially if you can get some cardio exercise while
you’re at it! With the warmer temperatures that summer brings, walking or
running outside can be a refreshing supplement to any exercise regime. Here are
a few tips to keep in mind for anyone planning on walking or running outside
this summer.
Very important are the shoes
you will wear! Because you will most likely be on pavement, there will be more
impact to be absorbed by your body. Counter this with a good pair of shoes that
fit properly and have effective support and shock absorption. Also, make sure
that the shoes you have aren’t worn out. The shock absorption can wear out on
certain shoes quite quickly, even though they still look good.
If you are on the side of a
road, go and come back on the same side so that each foot gets a turn being on
the side nearest to the road. This is because there is a slight slope to most
roads and sidewalks (designed for drainage) and to prevent muscles imbalances
you want to alternate the muscles compensating for the slope.
Bring water and avoid the
hottest times of the day. Early morning and early evening temperatures are
typically cooler and easier for the body to manage. Dress appropriately, wear
clothes that breathe and evaporate moisture from the skin. Don’t forget the
sunscreen and sunglasses!
Avoid high traffic areas and
be sure to wear visible clothing that has light reflecting properties.
Try to stay on ground that is
even. Use extra caution if you are going to be on trails or uneven
surfaces.
Try to include hills and
change your route often. Instead of aiming for a destination, try aiming for a
time and see how far you can go in the time you’ve allotted yourself (but don’t
forget to account for the way back too!)
To motivate yourself, you can
register for an upcoming charity marathon as an end goal to your training. Get
friends involved or adopt a pet who needs walking.
Most importantly, have
fun!
